Sibling age gaps

Sibling age gaps

Age gaps can play a big role in sibling rivalry and all children experience different forms of jealousy at some age.

Research shows that the two to four year gap often produces the worst sibling rivalry, although it’s the most common gap to leave. The problem seems to be less if the gap is larger than five years, or smaller than 18 months, but plenty of parents report rivalry between these ages too. Each child and their relationship to others is totally unique, and even your well-thought out plans can produce sibling rivalry.

The number of children you have can also play a part, as having several may mean they compete for your affection, whereas three children can gang up on each other. There’s little you can do, except for approaching the birth of each baby sensitively with your older children, and making sure you spend plenty of individual time with each child after your new baby arrives..
