Sperm Sorting
Sperm sorting describes the technique by which sperm is sorted into samples with increased proportions of either X-chromosome (female) or Y-chromosome sperm to increase the chances of conceiving a baby of your preferred sex.
For couples where one or both partners carry a genetic disease that affects only one sex – for example, Duchenne's muscular dystrophy, which affects only boys – sperm sorting is the only chance they may have of conceiving a healthy baby.
However, some critics believe that sperm sorting is unacceptable in any circumstance and the process is often used by couples who want to 'balance' their families – one well-known clinic says that 40 percent of the couples who seek treatment there do so for non-medical reasons.
