Childbirth preparation classes

Childbirth preparation classes

During your pregnancy, there should be an opportunity for you to take childbirth education classes. These may be at the hospital or the birthing center where you’ll be having your baby. The latter option will be less expensive, although classes can be crowded. You may also opt to take private classes.

Not only will these classes give you heaps of information about what to expect during childbirth and in the early days with your baby, they can also help to allay fears you may have and make you feel more in control of your birthing experience.

For first time parents, there is a lot to be gained from feeling prepared about childbirth. If your partner is able to attend classes with you it can be a great way of helping him feel more involved in the whole process. Pregnancy can be a difficult period for some men, as they can’t actively experience what their partners are going through. Going to classes can give them an opportunity to feel useful and talk to other dads-to-be.

The topics covered in childbirth education classes usually include information on the signs of labor, how labor progresses, breathing and relaxation techniques that will help you cope with contractions, and what your partner can do to help. The instructor will also cover medical pain relief and what might happen if there are complications during the birth. They’ll also look beyond the birth, to caring for your newborn (including how to change a baby’s diaper) and breastfeeding.

Types of class

If you are sure you’ll want to take advantage of pain relief medication during your labor then the classes offered by your hospital will tell you all you need to know.

If you’d like to try for a natural birth, opt for classes that give you as much information as possible about active labor and non-medical forms of pain relief. Your options will include:

Lamaze These classes aim to educate you about the physiology of labor and to empower you to give birth naturally. Although the emphasis is on natural labor, using breathing and different positions to ease pain, you’ll also find out about medical pain relief.

Bradley Method The emphasis in these classes is on natural birth, in the belief it’s what women’s bodies are designed for. You’ll be taught different breathing techniques to manage pain, and positions to make your contractions more effective; and your partner will be show how to be closely involved in your labor. In addition to this, pregnancy nutrition and fitness will also be covered.
