20 reasons to enjoy pregnancy
So you're pregnant; congratulations! When you discover that you're going to be a parent it's undoubtedly one of the most exciting moments in your life. Before you have your baby, however, you've got nine months of pregnancy ahead of you.
While many women love being pregnant, others find it a bit more of a struggle, as you have emotional ups and downs, physical changes and bouts of morning sickness to contend with.
For those of you who fall into this category, here we've provided you with 20 reasons to love your pregnancy:
1) You can eat what you like (within reason). Although you should try to maintain a healthy diet during your pregnancy, you can indulge in the occasional treat.
2) You can indulge any weird and wacky cravings; watch our video for ideas on the kind of foods you might be yearning for. (Read Foods to avoid during pregnancy to make sure you're not having anything that isn't safe to eat while you're expecting).
3) Watching your belly grow. If you've always been somewhat body-conscious, you may initially find it hard to accept the fact that your bump is growing at a rate of knots, but remember that it's all in a good cause; you're growing a life! As your bump is growing, so is your baby. Share snaps of your expanding belly into our Baby Bumps gallery.
4) The first time your baby kicks is a momentous occasion. This will happen at around 18-20 weeks of pregnancy and will strengthen the bond between you and your little one.
5) Ultrasound scans are another highlight of pregnancy; seeing your baby for the first time is incredibly exciting and will make your pregnancy seem more real.
6) Many women find that during their second trimester, their skin takes on a rosy hue. So if you've always suffered from acne break-outs, revel in your clear complexion!
7) You may also find that your hair becomes glossier and thicker. So if you've previously had fine hair, you may be pleasantly surprised to find that you now have an impressive mane! This is because when you're pregnant you do not shed as much hair.
8) Stronger nails! During pregnancy you might also notice that your nails grow more quickly and are less brittle; this is because your circulation is better.
9) Your pregnancy will also (with any luck!) have a positive effect on your relationship, bringing you closer together as you experience this incredible journey together. Read How to involve your partner in pregnancy for more tips.
10) Enjoy being pampered; pregnancy, especially when you reach the third trimester, is a time for you to enjoy being waited on hand and foot! If your partner offers to make you a nice meal, or run you a soothing bath, take him up on it! Why not ask him to give you a pregnancy massage while he's at it? Enjoy it while it lasts...
11) Use it as a time to do things that you've wanted to for ages, such as take a mini-break with your partner. Remember that once your little one arrives, you'll have your hands full so now's the time to do it. Also make sure that you have plenty of lie-ins while you still can!
12) Buy yourself a new wardrobe; it's not all men's shirts and billowing dresses anymore, you know! Read our features on How to wear your bump and Maternity Clothes for more ideas on how to dress comfortably yet stylishly.
13) Celebrate your new curves; have you always dreamed of a bigger bust? Well your wish may well have come true. The majority of pregnant women find that their breasts become fuller.
14) Sharing your news with your friends and family members is a special occasion; have the hankies at the ready when you tell your Mum that she's going to be a granny!
15) Childbirth preparation classes are an important part of pregnancy as not only do they help prepare you for labour, birth and caring for your baby but you will also meet and make friends with other mums-to-be!
16) Choosing a baby name is another exciting part of pregnancy; stock up on baby name books and check out gurgle's babynamer with your partner for some great ideas. Will you choose a celebrity, classic or quirky name for your little one?
17) You have your maternity leave to look forward to and the fact that you will have at least 6 months of uninterrupted quality time to spend with your baby, while still being paid! Read our feature on Maternity leave and pay to find out how much you're entitled to.
18) Your prescriptions are free throughout your pregnancy and until your child's first birthday, so you can save a bit of money here and spend it on an adorable outfit for your baby instead.
19) Have a baby shower; drop some (not so subtle!) hints to your mum or best friend that you're keen on the idea, put your feet up and let them do the rest! What better reason to have a party than the fact you're about to become a parent?
20) You can chat with other gurgle members also eagerly anticipating the arrival of their bundle of joy!
