Staying active
Lots of women swear by staying upright and active as an effective way of reducing labor pain. Most births depicted in movies or on TV show women lying on their backs, but staying upright and letting gravity help your baby to move down can make labor faster and contractions easier to deal with.
TENS machine
TENS stands for transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation, and this small machine works by sending mild electrical impulses into your body via adhesive pads that attach to your back. They block pain and stimulate your body to release endorphins, its natural painkillers. TENs has no effect on your baby, but bear in mind that it can’t be used in a birthing pool.
Controlled breathing
Breathing properly can ease the pain of contractions because it helps you relax and focus on working with your body to deliver your baby. Practice taking slow, deep breaths and focus solely on your breathing. At the beginning of a contraction, breathe in slowly through your nose, hold for a couple of seconds and breathe slowly out through your mouth. Relaxation
Breathing is a big part of relaxation, but music can also help. You may be able to bring an MP3 player, iPod or CD player to the hospital with you so you can listen to whatever music makes you feel calm and in control.
Water
A warm bath can ease the pain of contractions and relaxes your muscles, releasing any residual tension. A hot water bottle on your back can work in the same way and might be handy if you’re on your way to hospital in a car and experiencing contractions.
Massage
This can be a great help, so it may be wise to run through some basic massage techniques with your birth partner before you go into labor. Kneading your lower back can be effective if you’re experiencing backache. Massage can also help your birth partner to feel they are involved and helping in some way.
Hypnotherapy

Natural remedies
Essential oils are a great way to relieve tension and anxiety during labor. Studies have shown that these natural remedies can help relieve the pain of contractions and reduce the likelihood of medical intervention. Jasmine, clary, sage, rose oil and lavender are just some of the oils that can help you to cope with labor in a calm and relaxed way. Consult a registered aromatherapist, as some oils are not suitable for use in pregnancy and birth.
