Can I take my newborn outside?
If you’ve been discharged from
hospital, then it’s safe to take your baby outside, although you may want to
have a few days at home before you venture into the great outdoors.
For your first trip outside
choose somewhere close, such as a park or local restaurant, to walk too. Make
sure your baby is dressed for the weather:
sunhat and onesie in the summer; warm clothes, hat and gloves in the
winter. If your baby has been unsettled, plan your first walk for when she’d
usually nap so the motion of her stroller can lull her to sleep.
Take a bottle of formula or
breast milk with you, or a shawl if you plan to breastfeed while you’re out.
Pack muslins in case your baby spits up and take a rain cover or sun canopy for
her stroller, depending on the weather.
If you had a cesarean, or still
have stitches from a tear or episiotomy, you may not be able to walk far but
it’ll feel good to be out of the house and strolling with your new baby. After
your six-week postpartum check you can carry on as normal in terms of gentle
exercise or yoga.
