How to hold a Newborn
It’s perfectly safe for family and friends to hold your baby, but make sure they’re holding her correctly.
Newborn babies have very little head control and their heads will loll to one side if they aren’t supported. If your baby is picked up awkwardly and feels uncomfortable, rest assured she’ll let the world know with a yelp and a scream!
The best way to hold a newborn is either cradled in your arms, or against your shoulder with her head turned to the side and her back supported by your hand. Make sure that all visitors have washed their hands, and that young children don’t hold your baby without supervision. If your baby is being passed from relative to relative, don’t be afraid to take her back for a bit of quiet mommy time. Your baby can get overstimulated and anxious if she is passed among unfamiliar faces, so give her a break after a while.
Hot tip
Newborn babies love to be held in the ‘tigger’ position. Lie her on her front, with her head on your wrist and her legs dangling either side of your elbow. Your forearm is basically supporting her body and she resembles a baby cub lying on a branch.
