Is my baby developing normally?
All babies are different and
they don’t develop at the same rate.
Take all development guides as rough
guides and try not to rush your baby or compare him with other babies his age. If he hasn’t smiled yet, and he’s over six weeks, don’t panic – he’ll smile,
laugh and giggle when he’s ready.
Your baby will do things at his
own pace and before long, you’ll be wishing you could turn back the clock to
when he was that tiny baby who lay in one place gurgling while you read a
magazine – not exploring the pantry with sticky fingers!
If you’re worried about your
baby or toddler's development, see our baby milestones articles, which will
hopefully reassure you that all babies reach milestones at different times.
Remember also, that if your child reaches a milestone earlier or later it has
no bearing on his intelligence or learning skills when he’s older.
Bear in mind that bottlefed babies are generally bigger than breastfed
babies and premature
babies should be measured in terms of
development from their estimated due date rather than their actual birth date.
If you’re still concerned, speak
to your pediatrician, who can reassure you further.
