When can the ultrasound detect twins?
An ultrasound scan can show whether you’re carrying twins or multiples as early as your first trimester screen, carried out between 11 and 13 weeks.
The sonographer can even identify whether you’re carrying identical or fraternal twins by measuring the thickness of the membranes that separate the two amniotic sacs in your uterus. At this stage it’ll be too early to tell what sex your babies are.
If you’re carrying twins, the first trimester of your pregnancy will be similar to every other pregnancy except your symptoms may be more pronounced. This means that morning sickness, nausea and cravings may be stronger than in a single pregnancy. You may also gain slightly more weight during your pregnancy (about 15-25 pounds rather than 10-20 pounds with a single baby pregnancy).
Most women experience tiredness during the first trimester but you may experience extreme fatigue if you are carrying more than one baby. As depleting as this is, it will ease off and you should get your energy levels back early in your second trimester (weeks 13-28).
If you’re expecting twins, why not post a message or join a group of moms who’ve had twins to share your experiences of pregnancy and birth when expecting multiples? One thing’s for certain – the more advice you get, especially from other moms with twins, can only be a good thing! Click on groups to join or start a group or chat to post a message.
