Geek names: what you need to know about naming your baby

Geek names: what you need to know about naming your baby

It wasn’t very long ago that the word ‘geek’ was an insult directed at the guy who sat at the back of the classroom, who couldn’t socialize with anyone because he’d lost the ability to talk to humans and spent more time on his computer than he did sleeping.

What was his name? Can’t remember because he was so insignificant? That is until he popped back up on your radar because he’d built a search engine in his garage that you use every day!

All of a sudden it’s much cooler to be a geek. From technology to comedy and fashion, the geek phenomenon now extends to thousands of parents-to-be (and not just those who were geeks themselves). Quite simply, if you’re looking to raise a child destined for great things in the future you could do worse than raise a geek. Emphasis on computers rather than sports in education and more teenagers than ever owning ipods, wii’s, laptops or phones that do all these jobs, means that success at school is suddenly more about IT, study and brains than it is about being a jock or prom queen. This extends to the business arena, where some of the world’s richest men are geeks. Bill Gates – need we say more.

Raising a geek starts at the very beginning – it’s all in a name. When you were growing up there was probably a penchant for kids being called the same spate of names: Josh, Matt, Jessica, Ashley. This was because parents wanted their children to fit in – but fitting in with the crowd goes against the very ethos of the geek. The point of the geek is that they’re individuals – shy, awkward and unusual. This is what makes a geek grow up to be great: the ability to be different and to learn not to care about it.

Choose a strong geek name with some history – Steve, George, Hillary, Joan – to stand your child in good stead. By giving your child a ‘cool’ name, you’re saddling them with the burden of expectation. Forget Carson and Jayden – giving your baby a geek name means you can let them be unusual and pursue their own goals without the expectations that come with a more exciting name.

Geeks have traditionally been boys and men, but don’t be fooled. Geek girls are on the rise. Just as skaters, surfers and sportsman have their female fans, so to do geeks. So why not think about giving your new daughter a solid geek name like Bertina, Edwina or Eugenia, to secure her status in the geek pack and to help her stand out from the crowd.
