The day I found out I was pregnant

The day you find out you’re pregnant
is so special, whether you’ve been trying for a baby for a long time or you hit the jackpot the first month. So where were you and what were you doing when the blue line appeared?

“I’m a journalist and was in Chicago to interview one of the all-time sporting greats, basketball player Michael Jordan. But I was feeling so sick and had been for days. I did the pregnancy test just to rule it out really because I’d been told I had fertility problems that would mean I was unlikely to conceive naturally. I couldn’t believe the result… I was overwhelmed. The interview was dreadful though: I was all smiles one minute, feeling like I was about to hurl the next. He must have thought I was crazy…”
Calley Walsh, mom to Jensen, 18 months

“I was flying long-haul and kept having to get up and go to the restroom every 10 minutes. One of the flight attendants raised an eyebrow the nth time I walked by her and said that was the first pregnancy symptom she’d ever had… and it suddenly struck me that my period was three days late!”
Emily Costello, mom to Maya, 6 months

“I was getting undressed for bed one night when my husband’s eyes literally rocketed out on stalks and he stammered that my breasts had grown enormous overnight! I did the test the next morning and hit the bullseye.
Alison Casey, mom to Josh, 11 months

“I was actually hugely worried when I found out I was expecting because it wasn’t long after Christmas and New Year and I’d been partying hard. So not as joyous as I’d hope that sort of news would be, because I was full sure that all those cocktails and keg parties might have harmed my baby. It was such a relief when all my tests and scans showed she was healthy…”
Kathryn Garner, mom to Shelby, 2

“I kept bursting into tears! At everything! My boyfriend put two and two together and stopped by the drugstore for a pregnancy test on his way home from work one evening. As you can imagine, those tears were tears of happiness!”
Malita Lewis, mom to Cheyenne, 13 months

“I couldn’t face candy, which is just so unlike me. I always have a supply in the house but suddenly just knowing it was in the pantry was enough to turn my stomach. I wrapped it, bagged it, boxed it and taped it up, and stuck it on the highest shelf in my closet. When I told my mom she told me to test right there and then and it was positive! All through my pregnancy I couldn’t stand the though of anything sweet but then two days before I went into labor I got this sudden craving for it, rescued the box and ate the whole lot inside an hour!”
Kourtney Mitchell, mom to Cole, 7 months

“I found out I was pregnant the month after I had a miscarriage and I was overwhelmed – it felt like a second chance. But it didn’t make my pregnancy very easy initially because I was convinced every twinge and incidence of spotting meant I was going to lose this baby too. Thankfully I didn’t and she’s due next month!”
Kirby Lawrence, 36 weeks pregnant with baby Miley

“I actually felt pretty guilty when I found out I was pregnant because I could count it back to the one and only time I fantasized that I was doing the deed with someone else – Colonel Jack O’Neill from the sci-fi show Stargate SG-1. Don’t laugh! He was so handsome! The weird thing is that my son has really dark brown eyes just like his spiritual daddy and they don’t run in our families at all! And no, I’ve never let onto his dad… but I did insist we named our son Jack!”
Heidi Sullivan, mom to Jack, 3

“It was a hugely emotional day for me because I had apparently miscarried six weeks before. But I kept having what seemed to be pregnancy symptoms so my OB-GYN suggested I test. It was positive and her theory is that I had originally conceived twins and miscarried one – but my little boy hung on in there.”
Laura Noone, mom to Tyler, 14 weeks
