Trying to conceive six months plus

Trying to conceive six months plus

It can feel very frustrating after six months of trying, when your period arrives, again. Especially when everywhere you look you see babies, babies, babies.

But unless you are over 35, there is no reason to worry. The average couple takes up to a year to conceive and for 90 per cent of couples it will take up to 18 months. If you are under 35 and have had regular intercourse (sex every two to three days) without protection for a year, it’s probably time to seek medical help. If you are over 35, it is recommended that you seek medical advice after six months of trying. See When should I worry? and Over 35 and trying for a baby.

There are lots of factors which could hinder your chances of getting pregnant, for instance, how stressed you are (especially with the added pressure of trying to get pregnant) and when you are having sex.

Have you used our Ovulation calculator to work out when your most fertile days are? All you have to know is the date your last period started and how long your cycle usually lasts for. The calculator will predict when your fertile days are likely to be over the next year so you can be sure you are having regular sex on these days.
If you are still having trouble conceiving, try going away for the weekend to change your environment. Don't be too strict on yourself, a glass of wine to get you in the mood will not harm your chances of conceiving (although heavy drinking from both partners may affect your chances).

It can be a very stressful as each month goes by and you still haven't fallen pregnant yet. Try not to put too much pressure on yourself or your partner or to blame each other for not falling pregnant. If your life seems to revolve around your fertile period each month and you can feel yourselves getting obsessed with the mission to conceive, consider taking some time off. Some couples find that relaxing and having a break actually leads to them falling pregnant. Going on holiday and not even thinking about body temperatures or fertile days can sometimes result in a pregnancy!

If everyone around you seems to be having babies or talking about babies, you may need some time out from seeing those friends with families. This does not mean you have to cut them out of your life, but if you find it more stressful when you see them as it puts more pressure on you, have a little break. The same goes for seeing relatives who constantly enquire to why you are not pregnant.

If you are concerned about not falling pregnant, make an appoitnment with your GP or a family planning advisor who can advise you on any further checks you may need, or simply put your mind at rest.
