Celebrity Baby Names

Celebrity Baby Names

Over the years, celebrities have caused controversy with the weird and wonderful names they have bestowed upon their offspring. Apple, anyone?

Although it might seem tempting to give your child a name that stands out in the crowd, it’s important to remember that a name is for life, not just for Christmas. (Well, there’s always the courts… Bruce Willis and Demi Moore’s daughter, Tallulah Belle, has reportedly already tried to change her name!).

What might seem cute and quirky for a baby may well be perceived as strange for an adult. Furthermore, while a child is growing up and trying to establish a firm sense of identity, the last thing they need to worry about is whether they will be teased over their name. And what about when they’re older – they might not be taken seriously in the office-place or in board meetings.

In some cases, celebrities do seem to have set a trend. Many people have copied the name Apple, for example. When Kate Moss called her daughter Lila Grace, both Lila and Grace became popular girls’ names: although when Madonna named her daughter Lourdes, it seemed to have the opposite effect and the name went down in popularity. What you can’t anticipate, however is how a celebrity's popularity will last. Imagine what it's like being named after Michael Jackson now...

There are possible benefits of giving your baby a celebrity name, as a lot of them are certainly unique and never boring! But if you’re thinking of copying a celebrity’s choice of baby name, to go for one that’s unusual rather than completely off the wall. There’s a difference between giving your child a unique name, such as ‘Ireland’ or ‘Suri’ and calling them something like ‘Pilot Inspektor’, as My Name is Earl star Jason Lee did with his son. It’s a matter of using your common sense. Put yourself in your child’s shoes; would you really want to go through life having to answer to Bluebell Madonna (Spice Girl Geri Halliwell’s daughter) or Diva Muffin (progeny of Frank Zappa)? Don't forget celebrities have lives which are far from normal so can usually get away with the stranger baby names, but your baby will grow up alongside kids with far less bizarre names and may resent being called Coco Love.
