Your mother’s day pampering special
Whether or not it’s your first Mother’s Day, being a mom is a 24-7, 365-days-of-the-year job – or make that 364 days. Because this of all days is the one you deserve to have off – or at least take a brief raincheck from. It’s your one opportunity to focus on you and not your baby or toddler (and you could be one sexy mama at the end of the day!) and here are gurgle’s tips for how to do it…
Indulge in lotions and potions!
This is something busy moms almost never get that chance to do. We all get used to five minutes in the shower and a quick towel down before the baby starts crying for a feed or cuddle – slapping on some moisturizer just isn’t a priority. On Mother’s Day, make it one – take an extra five or ten minutes to rub in the gorgeously scented goo your thirsty skin craves.
Invent a home-made facial
Mashed avocado and banana makes a lovely cooling treat for your face, and you can eat the leftovers! Throw in a teaspoon of sesame seeds and you’ve just made your own scrub…
Get your nails done
Why shouldn’t you? After all, the nail bar has it down to a fine art and you’ll be in and out in 45 minutes or so, with beautifully buffed and polished nails and soft skin (nothing beats a good foot rub when you aren’t having to do it yourself!). Hands and nails really suffer after you have a baby, with the constant washing that needs to be factored in after diaper changes and before feeding your baby. They deserve some TLC.
Have a makeover
Take yourself to the nearest beauty department at one of the large department stores and a beautician will make you up for free using top-of-the-line products. It’s a great way of looking your best if you’re going out for dinner with a loved one to celebrate Mother’s Day.
Be a lady who lunches
Forget that quick grilled cheese you usually rustle up at midday – treat yourself to a proper lunch out or, if you have a toddler and baby, to take-out that frees you up from making a plateload of PB&J sandwiches you’ll end up scraping off the floor half an hour later.
Book a dream clean
Arrange for a cleaning firm to come out and clean your home from top to bottom. In fact you should do this before Mother’s Day so you can enjoy your spick and span surroundings on the day itself (and to ensure you’re not stuck indoors waiting for them to show up when you should be out getting that manicure we mentioned earlier…).
Take a yoga class
It’s the perfect mix of physical exercise and mental relaxation and learning some basic positions will help you get those core abdominal muscles back in shape too (goodbye
mommy tummy!). Your local fitness center or YMCA will likely offer classes and might also have daycare facilities for your baby while you take your class.
Take in a movie
Arrange for an afternoon
babysitter or ask a family member or friend to watch your baby while you take in an afternoon show at your local movie theater. It really does beat evening showings when you’re so tired you drift off to sleep before the opening credits have ended!
See scents
Splurge on a really exquisite scented candle just for today – depending on how you’re finding life as a new mom you can choose from energizing or relaxing essential oil- based candles that really do soothe and relax.
Take the night off
Leave the baby with your mom or another relative and book into a hotel for a night to yourself (or yourselves) without having to worry about night feeds and dawn choruses. Once you’ve checked in, soak in the spa bath and then lounge on the bed wearing those fluffy hotel bathrobes, and watching a pay-per-view movie while you choose dinner from the room service menu. Don’t even think about leaving the room until checkout time!
