Constipation
Constipation is very common during pregnancy, as hormones relax your bowel and make it less effective when it comes to moving food through your digestive system. The symptoms can be worsened if you have to take an iron supplement.
Exercise can help wake up a sluggish bowel and foods that are rich in fiber will travel through your digestive system faster, so include plenty of fruit and vegetables and whole grains in your diet. Water is also an effective weapon in the fight against constipation, as it helps soften and bulk out stools, making them easier to pass.
See diet for a healthy pregnancy for more information. If all those measures fail to work, talk to your OB-GYN or nurse-midwife about the possibility of taking pregnancy-safe laxatives.
