Cravings during pregnancy

Cravings during pregnancy

Most pregnant women find they crave certain foods or tastes. It’s likely some cravings are associated with your dietary needs at this time – for example, a desire for chocolate could be reflective of your slightly increased calorie needs although chocolate probably isn’t the best way to get them!

Common cravings include fruit, pickles (onions, gherkins etc), potato chips, and milk or dairy products (go to our article how much extra food do I need? for further advice). Some cravings can be pretty strange – how about lemons, chilis, lobster, blue cheese, the smell of bleach and even soap?

If you are experiencing slightly more unusual cravings though, this may be a sign that you’re lacking important minerals or nutrients in your diet and it’s advisable to consult your OB-GYN or nurse- midwife. They’ll likely have heard it all before and may be able to point to any dietary elements you’re missing.
