Heartburn in pregnancy
Heartburn is a pretty common complaint during pregnancy. It occurs when pregnancy hormones cause the muscle to the stomach to relax, allowing acidic digestive juices to surge into the esophagus.
The result is that all-too-common burning sensation in your chest. It can get worse in late pregnancy, as your growing baby puts pressure on your stomach.
How to avoid heartburn
- Large meals are a no-no – eating little and often is the best way to combat heartburn.
- Eat your last meal of the day earlier than usual, so that your food isn’t digesting while you are trying to sleep, and sleep propped up on pillows so that gravity helps keep that acid where it belongs.
Don’t slouch or lie down while eating. Also, eat slowly and thoroughly chew each mouthful (just like your mom always told you to!). Gulping food and air down in equal measure isn’t a recipe for a heartburn-free meal.
- Ditch spicy foods, fast food and soda – they can irritate your digestive system. So can coffee, citrus fruit and tomatoes.
- Use herbs and spcies that combat heartburn when cooking, such as garlic, ginger, dill, and caraway or fennel seeds. Teas like dandelion-root or chamomile may also help.
