Blocked nose and pregnancy

Blocked nose and pregnancy

Having a blocked up, stuffy nose during pregnancy is very common.

It’s caused by your mucus and nasal membranes swelling because of the increased levels of estrogen and progesterone in your body. It’s not normally associated with having a cold or other infection, but it can be a mild irritation.

If, on top of a blocked-up nose, you also sneeze and have itchy eyes, nose or ears, you’re probably experiencing the effects of an allergy. Some women develop allergies for the first time during their pregnancies. If it is winter and you are using the heating system in your house, invest in a de-humidifier to helps prevent the air becoming overly dry and exacerbating your symptoms.

Wear a dust mask when you’re vacuuming and cleaning and try to use a damp cloth when dusting. Unless you’ve been advised to use a nasal decongestant don’t use this type of medication. Some women have found relief from this kind of irritation through homeopathy. See our section on natural remedies during pregnancy for more information.
