Miracle baby born at 30,000ft
Little Alfie Delemere was born at 30,000ft in an aircraft chair and was kept alive with a straw...
Mum Nicola, 31, went into labour, three months early half way into her flight from Manchester to Crete, and baby Alfie was delivered straight into a cabin chair weighing just 1lb.
Because Alfie was so premature he needed specialist treatment which wasn't available on the flight, so stewardess Carol Miller improvised by blowing a straw gently into Alfie's tiny lungs to clear them. The stewardess then gave him mouth-to-mouth resuscitation and heart massage for 30 minutes as the aircraft was diverted to Gatwick.
Alfie's parents descibe Carol as 'Alfie's angel', but the modest stewardess said: "I just applied my medical training."
Alfie spent six weeks in hospital after he was born but Dad Dominic, from Scunthorpe, North Lincolnshire. said: "He's now fit."
