Daily sex improves fertility

According to doctors, daily sex imporves a man's fertility as research shows that those who do not have sex often produce a lower quality of sperm than those who have sex on a regular basis.

The reasons behind this are because a sperm's DNA is thought to become more damaged the longer it remains in the body, lowering the chances of fertilisation and raising the risk of miscarriage in the first weeks of pregnancy.

The findings were presented at the American Society for Reproductive Medicine's annual conference, in the States and will be of particular interest to couples undergoing fertility treatment. Current guidelines advise men to stop having sex in the days leading up to when they are required to give a sperm sample for IVF treatment.

Until now, abstaining from sex for three to seven days before giving a sperm sample was thought to increase the quality of sperm and help to increase the chances of falling pregnant. But this may be set to change.

Australian researchers looked into the sperm quality of more than 40 men whose wives had failed to get pregnant or who had suffered from repeated miscarriages. They found that when the men had no sex for three days there were high-levels of DNA damage in their sperm. They were tested again after having daily sex and it was revealed the sperm damage had dropped by a third.

Researcher Dr David Greening, from the Sydney IVF clinic, said: "I'm convinced ejaculating more frequently reduces sperm DNA damage in most men."
