Anomaly scan
Most
women are offered this between weeks 16 and 20, in order to check that their
baby is developing properly.
Your baby’s body, limbs and organs will be
carefully examined to ensure that certain conditions aren’t present – if you’ve
had a positive screening test result, the scan will be even more thorough.
Keep
in mind that there is always a risk abnormalities won’t be picked up on a scan
and there could still be undiagnosed issues with your baby’s development.
However, for certain conditions, this scan is highly effective. Neural tube
defects such as anencephaly and spina bifida, major kidney problems, major
limb abnormalities and defects of the abdominal wall, are all likely to be seen
if they exist. Other conditions, such as congenital heart problems and
hydrocephalus (excess fluid on the brain) may also be diagnosed at this stage. It’s also at this scan that you may be told what sex your baby is going to be
if you’d like to know.
