When can the ultrasound test detect twins?

Even if you’re in line for twins (the hereditary gene often skips a generation), it’s likely to come as a complete surprise that you’re going to become parents to two babies at the same time.

An ultrasound scan can show whether you’re carrying twins or multiples as early as your first trimester screen, usually scheduled between weeks 11 and 1312 week scan. The sonographer can even check whether you’re carrying identical or fraternal twins by measuring the thickness of the membranes thatt separate the two amniotic sacs in your uterus. At 12 weeks it’s still too early to tell what sex your babies are.??

Seeing your babies for the first time will be very exciting, even if they look like two blobs with big heads! But don't be surprised if you go through a multitude of emotions after you discover the news. Your sonographer will be used to giving parents-to-be unexpected news, so don't fret about what they might think of your tears, hysterical laughter or any other reaction!

Although they’re unlikely to be wrong about the presence of additional babies, scans aren’t infallible… there are countless stories of parents who were told during a scan that their baby was a little boy, only to get a shock when a baby girl popped out!

Discovering you’re expecting twins can bring other issues to the forefront, such as finances or breastfeeding. See our features on the financial impact of having a baby and breastfeeding twins for more information.

Why not create a group for parents expecting twins? That way you can meet other parents who are probably feeling as scared as you are!
