The dangers of naming your baby

The dangers of naming your baby

If you thought that naming your baby was the treat that comes after a hard labour and birth; think again. What you call your baby will actually have a significant bearing on her future job, which university she attends and how she fits in with her peers.

According to the author of The Name Game and The Babyname Report Card, Albert Mehrabian, the more unusual your name is, the harder you will find it to adjust in the future.

“Irrespective of whether we are aware of it, wish it or not, our names make statements about us to others,” he states.

What Mehrabian suggests for parents going through the process of naming their baby, is to see the name as something that your child has to carry with her for the rest of her life. He adds:  “This appendage (the name) can make a distinct pattern of positive-negative impressions on others if you mistakenly select a name that has an undesirable impression.”

What he is referring to, are parents who name their babies on a whim or a passing craze. This can mean lengthening or shortening an existing name to make it more ‘unique’, making up a name entirely, or following celebrity crazes such as calling your daughter Apple (Gwyneth Paltrow). Mehrabian adds: “There is evidence to suggest that children with made up names don’t do well at school, they don’t do so well psychologically, don’t settle in.”

In short (and brutally), you should consider your child as a brand that you have to name. What do you expect from your child? All parents want their children to be successful but this doesn’t mean we should call them the most outlandish name we can think of purely to help them stand out. Equally, calling your child a name like John can work in the same way – because it can be seen as dull or conventional.

Think about the future. Do you want Allyianna to correct her teacher every time her name is mispronounced or misspelled? Also, Happy might be sweet for a toddler, but will the jury take her seriously should she become a lawyer one day? "People are not thinking about 25 years from now," Mr. Mehrabian says.

So, the rules are clear. Think to the future. Imagine the CV arriving on an employer’s desk and what they will think about your child. How seriously will they take Harley compared to William. Are they more likely to see Scarlet over Anne? Of course go with the name you love; just think very carefully about it first.

ok i agree to a point that calling ur child something like 'Tallulah Tinklepuss' is probably not such a great idea but the guy's argument was 'would harley get considered over william' or 'scarlet over anne' hang on-whats so wrong with harley or scarlet?? its not like they are crazy out-there names are they?? i know a few harley and scarelt's and so many children have unique or made up names that are just lovely.

i think this man probably has issues with his own name rather than others and his insecurities have manifested themselves into a hate campaign against poor little harleys, scarlets and other contemporary names everywhere hehe
Hahahaha, he's probably called Huckleberry Humperdink :D xXx

my dad wanted to call my brother Moses! hes now 30 and i think all the family are glad he didn't get his way..

we spend 9 months choosing our child's name and it is a name they have for life i think some people need to look at the name and think ok ts cute as a child is it as a teenager or an adult will it fit then all their lives....

but also if a child isn't picked on for not having the right name bullies will always find something else....

my name is Jacqueline (aka Jackie) i wear glasses and have since i was about 5 and when i was 15 i had braces too... but i didn't get picked on for any of them it was because i had an accent ( i live in Kent now but lived in lancs til i was 10) so bullies always find something

Toatally agree hunni ! When my mum had my brother (Calum) she was told his name was too weird & he would get bullied blah blah - well he was the most popular guy in school & his name is really common now ! I want my baby to have an unusual name I just think theres a line - things like Sugar Rainbow are a step too far hehe xxx
Sugar Rainbow is a grower I think! Lol ! I think It's funny how everyone sees names differently...I c giving ur baby an unusual name as u hav put effort & thought in2 it instead of jst picking a "boring" name like Gary...Heehee! It's fine, I tell him often enuff he has a dull name...but It's really a god send cuz his mum wanted 2call him Retson :S Hahahahaha! "Lia do u take Retson 2b ur lawful wedded husband"...um, I dnt think so! Lol ! xXx

Times change...what would hav been perceived as "weird" 5/10years ago is common place now so I dnt think names hav that much of an impact anymore as they may once hav...unless u call ur child Hitler or something that is strongly connected 2something or someone not so pleasant! In this day & age people r more open 2unusual names cuz It's become the norm plus I've never heard of anyone being turned away from Uni because of there name...that's jst nonsense! Lia xXx

Not sure about this-I don't think it has such a major effect-at least no more than being super tall like me or having to wear glasses or braces-kids will always find something to pick on-and as to the future life is what you make it whatever your name. And what is wrong with Scarlett or Harley?
totslly agree lucy xx
