How to hide your pregnancy

How to hide your pregnancy

When you discover that you’re pregnant, you will probably feel like shouting it from the rooftops.

However, it’s normally advised that you wait until you’re three months pregnant before you tell anyone (with the exception of your partner, obviously!)

You may decide to tell your nearest and dearest – this is completely up to you, of course – but you may choose to keep it a secret from others until you’ve had your ultrasound scan at 12 weeks and been reassured by your doctor that everything’s fine.

Easier said than done, you may think! When you have morning sickness, fatigue and hormonal changes to contend with, you may find it somewhat tricky to hide your pregnancy from your friends and colleagues. Here we’ve provided some advice on how you can keep your pregnancy a secret until you’re ready for the world to know:

* Avoid tight-fitting clothes. Even if you don’t yet have a visible bump, your body may have already started to change shape.

* To help ease morning sickness, drink plenty of water and keep a supply of ginger biscuits in your handbag. Watch our video on Morning sickness: how to beat it for more tips.

* Try to get as much rest as you can; it may not be possible to have a power-nap at work, as eyebrows may be raised if you’re caught with your head at your desk, but have as many early nights as possible.

*  If you’re going out for work drinks, you will obviously need to avoid alcohol. Tell your colleagues that you’re having a detox as you've been feeling a bit sluggish recently; if you previously smoked you could also say that giving up cigarettes is part of your healthy new regime.

* Are you feeling somewhat weepy? This is very common in early pregnancy due to a huge surge in hormone levels. If you find that you're bursting into tears at the drop of a hat, you could blame your emotional outburst on the time of the month. (Obviously this excuse won’t work every day until you announce your pregnancy, so use it sparingly!)

I'm also a little worried about hiding mine for long enough, but the guide gave me some good ideas! I shall opt for one-size-up jumper dresses etc and say I need to stay warm, they all know I'm crazy for getting cold at work - I spent the few weeks before and after christmas with a hot water bottle in my pidgeon hole ready for lunch hour to warm me up! ^_^
I feel for you Natalie - though, in JoJoMamanBebe today there were 'tailored' style shift dresses in greys, blacks, and a grey/black tartan cotton, were £30something, now £10. I nearly bought one myself for work (I don't have to be as pretty as you do at mine, but I can't be 'rough' or scruffy either) but thought it may be premature yet but there are those types of clothes out there - even TopShop now do maternity and H&M - all the young sytles etc in bump-band/bump friendly wear! ^_^ Yey!!! ^_^

Its really hard when you're in the in-between stage where you have a bit of a belly, but not big enough for maternity clothes. But you can still get lovely fashionable clothing from highstreet stores that are loose fitting, like baby-doll style tops and things that you would normally wear, without it looking as though you are heavily pregnant and desperately trying to hide it!!!
After you have conceived, its up to you to decide how far along you want to be before you tell work colleagues etc. I doubt anyone would ever say anything about putting on weight, but if they did, like you say, just blame it on eating out lots and being really unhealthy lately!
When you start to feel a bit rough in early pregnancy, blame that on a night out (maybe not suitable for your work..?), or just say that you've had a funny bug/illness lately where you've just felt really under the weather. You could also say that you suffer from bad anaemia; not nice to lie lol, but they will forget when you come out with your big news!!
