Are August babies less likely to go to University?

Children born in August can sometimes be almost a whole year younger than other kids in their class, putting them at a disadvantage during their early school years. Now a thinktank study has found that children born in August are less likely to study at top universities than their older classmates.

Researchers at the Institute for Fiscal Studies (IFS) looked at whether there was a link between the month in which a child was born and what they tend to do when they leave school.

They studied 48,500 children and teenagers in England and found that children born in August were 20% less likely to go to top universities such as Oxford or Cambridge than classmates born eleven months earlier. The study also found that August-born babies were more likely to go on to study vocational courses instead.

A previous study carried out by the IFS, published in 2007, showed that August-born children were less likely to be academically successful than their September born classmates. The researchers also found that teachers were more likely to regard August-born pupils at aged seven as below-average in maths. During the study, teachers reported that 63% of September pupils were very ready to start secondary school when they approached the end of the last year at Primary, whilst 49% of their August-born classmates were less ready.

Claire Crawford, one of the authors of the study, said August-born children may, "end up doing worse than September-born children throughout their working lives, simply because of the month in which they were born".
"Studying for academic qualifications, attending a Russell Group university, and believing that you have control over your own life are all associated with a greater chance of being in work and having higher wages later in life," she said.

Researchers also found that August born children were less confident in their academic abilities and twice as likely at age seven to have been bullied. The differences between August-born children and their September-born classmates were most apparent at primary school than any other time.

Yeah at the start of the term I'll perhaps go the other day, or when my maiden name began with an M I'd start from there and now it's a D sometimes I start from there lol! Random theory, but there could be something in that one anyway! x

Em is this for real?!?!? The only folk I know born in August, one is a depute head, one is a teacher, one has graduated with a 2:1 in psychology, I can't think of anymore at the mo but sure I could! I think life may be determined by a bit more than the month you're born in lol!

There is a train of thought though if your name is at the top of the register that you're more bold because quite often teachers go through things in register order, have to say I do that so they're first to have a shot at learning the drums etc. But then you could say the last one in the register has all that time to panic and take it in so when it's their shot they're great, can't say I've found that to be the case yet though lol! x

To add my OH is also Aug birthday and he's a headteacher! But yes career choices also depend on what you want to do as you say Nat-indeed these days I will be encouraging my kids to do something that leads to a vocation rather than some random degree that doesn't end in a job! Neither of my sisters have jobs related to their degrees..

I think the birth date thing is just another load of ****.
Going to uni or anything else, doesn't have anything to do with what month you are born in.

i was worried about my son starting school he turned 4 on the 28th aug he's doing quite well i think it depends how much are you willing to put in with your child not when they were born and i dont think it matters whether or not my son goes to uni so long as he does well and i know i did my best

I really think it depends on more than your birthdate-things like whether your parents went to uni, your family financial situation, where you go to school.. My sis was Aug birthday and went to uni and my 3 yr old son is Aug birthday and is very bright-he can count to 20 and colours beautifully for his age. I am sure he'll be fine starting school at 4!
