Wild thing: Create a magical bedroom

Want to know what the big new childrens’ interior trends are for 2012?

You only have to see the way children show off their bedrooms like keen tour guides to understand how much their space means to them.

But what lies behind the process of filling shops with those tempting items that give them so much joy?

We love Rockett St George’s wallpaper for tots and adults alike – but for 2012 we predict a run on the Enchanted Forest range (above). Whether you choose to paper an entire room with these charming designs, or use it on a feature wall, the images of squirrels, bunnies, stags and birds will lull even the most sleep-resisitant toddler into a magical land of make-believe. It’s the stuff of dreams. (Available in three colours, £70 per roll, 52cm x 10m. rockettstgeorge.co.uk)

‘Stag heads are so on trend this year,’ says Jane of Rockett St George. ‘These brightly coloured papier mâché versions are perfect to brighten up children’s rooms – or they’re available as wall stickers. Kids more design-savvy these days. Children today have a keen eye for design and style. They know what they want and having a cool room is important to them.’

We asked Jane if she were a child again, what would she want to have in her bedroom?

...‘A pinball machine.’

wooden horsePlay and eat saddle

Tamasine Osher's Play and Eat Saddle Seat stood out a mile at the recent London Design Festival, and like so many of the emerging furniture trends it neatly marries animals and eco-creds. Coming soon.

New interiors trends may be kickstarted by the twitterings of celebrity parents – or perhaps the feeling of economic uncertainty – but will they cut the mustard with store buyers who know their customers better than they know themselves? And even more importantly, will they pass the rigorous testing of the harshest critics – the kids themselves? We chat to some of our favourite taste-makers to discover their top tips for 2012.

Corina from toy shop Kidsen says one of her favourite items is the Trojan Horse. ‘I love furniture that looks like one thing but actually has multiple functions. This wooden storage box looks like a ride-on toy – and children always sit on it in the shop – but it’s a great little storage unit for their treasures, they can pull it along with them, and it can even be used as a small desk. These clever units are created by a Swedish company called LEKA, meaning “to play” in Swedish.’

elephantWild walls

Sophie of EcoCentric loves this elephant wall cut-out crafted from vintage wallpaper. She says parents appreciate it's great retro style plus, because the silhouettes are made from recycled wallpaper, it has real eco-credentials.
