Sleep problems

My son is 18 months old and has always been quite good at sleeping. He normally has no problems going to bed and falling asleep on his own but the last week has been a nightmare! He screams and screams for up to an hour. We have tried patting his bottom (he cires as soon as we stop), picking him up (he cries as soon as put down) and leaving him to cry but it is getting worse and worse. He has also started in the last couple of weeks waking up at about 4.30 and crying on and off till we finally get him up about 6. He only has about an hour nap and goes to bed normally at 7 but we have been this week trying him at half 7 to see if that helps. My OH and I have had enough of all this crying and early mornings and are not sure what to do next! Do you think it's just a phase or something more? HELP PLEASE!!
