When we was expecting our last baby we had 3 scans all telling us that it was a girl. When I went into labour and had the baby it turned out to be a boy. We were all quite shocked as we thought that they couldnt get it wrong but they must do. When people tell me now what they are expecting I just alugh at them and tell them not a spend a fortune on things for the baby because it might just not be what you expect.
At seven weeks your tiny baby has no gender yet: if its to be a boy he will have one X chromosome (from you) and one Y from his father. If a girl an X chromosome from both of you: about now he/she will be developing a little "unisex" testes/ovary. In about a week or two the Y chromosome (if he has one) will tell that unisex testes/ovary to become a testes. if there is no Y chromosome this unisex structure will- a week or two later becomey an ovary. Nature makes female unless told otherwise.
The genitals are also unisex at this stage. When the testes begins making testosterone (the male hormone) in a few weeks they will devolop into male genitals. Without testosterone- if there is an ovary- they become female genitalia. So even if you had a scan now they could not tell.
