Birth Weight

Does anyone know if there is truth to this old wives tale. That if your mother has small, medium or big babies you'll have the same? im just a bit worried. my mum had 9 and 10 pound babies. so does that mean im in the running to have around the same. sorry if i sound like a big whinge. im honestly grateful i have a baby on the way. im just gettin my head ready for the impending 3rd trimester and birth.

As far as I know there is no relationship between the weight of babies in different generations. It seems unlikely given that babies who are not premature can be born 40 weeks +/- 2- 3 weeks- and will be of different weights if early or late. Many women have babies of very different weights. My mother had babies ranging from under seven pounds to over 10. Mine were all early so seven and under- but my three sisters filled in all the other gaps in my mother's range. As one might expect- since that is the range of weights for bies born. The exception here would be if you and your mother were diabetic- when you might both have big babies.

I havent had the pleasure of labour myself yet but when i do get to that point i will be expecting a big baby. I was 10,2 and my brother was 9,6 my dad was 11,2 and his dad was 13,2! Also my husband was fairly big at 8,11. Luckily though, i too have child bearing hips. I just wish i had a reason for them...i.e a baby!

I was about 7lb 7oz and all my Mum's other babies (3 more) went up about a pound each time. All the women in my Mum's family were about the same. I was the first female in my family to give birth to what they considered a small baby at 6lb 10oz. My second daughter was 7lb 10oz. Not sure how true the weight thing is but I am glad I inherited the child bearing hips!!
