Group B strep is one of the many bacteria that our bodies are exposed to during every day life.

It comes and goes within our bodies and poses no real threat unless you are pregnant and then it can be passed on to the unborn baby and cause problems in the first few days/weeks of life.

If Group B Strep is found during antenatal screening then it is important that the mum to be receives antibiotics during labour which will then pass through to the baby and provide cover against the Group B Strep bacteria if needed.

Group B strep is not routinely tested for in all pregnant women and there is a call by the Group B Strep Charity for all women to have a test in the third trimester.

For more information on Group B Strep have a look at this link http://www.gbss.org.uk/

I'm not excactly sure what it is but I know that if you have it it can cause health problems in your baby. I think mostly the test is private, they don't seem to offer it privately. My midwife told me you can google it to get a test sent through the post it costs about £20. You just swab and send back then you get the results a few days later. I guess they tell you when is best to test but I think fromm about 30 weeks onwards. If they are giving you antibiotics just in case then I suppose thats a good thing. x
