you won't pay NI twice but you will probably get taxed @ 20% basic rate unless your extra money is coming from the employer who is paying your SMP.
Thanks for that, good to know this site but be useful for so much more than discussing farts!!

even on maternity leave if you are on a regular 647L (as of April) tax code you can earn £124.48 a week without paying any tax but the NI has not been brought into line yet so if you earn more than £110 a week you still pay NI. so as SMP is now £123.18 you will still have to pay a little bit out of that but no a lot just a few pounds. does that make sence girls?!
I'm appointing you gurgle tax guru!! Do you know what will happen if I'm earning money from my own business while also getting maternity pay? Do I have to pay NI twice??
Wow, your brave? Did you get your nice big pass certificate? I think i may even bring my hols forward by 2 weeks rather than a month. Thanks for your help xxx
Yes I did pass, not really brave more stupid for leaving it so late to learn how to drive!!
You have no idea how much you have helped, lol, that gives me a rough idea. i thought i would have got taxed a hell of a lot more. I know about the child benefit which is a great help too.
The reason im so concerned is because my wages cover the mortgage and the small household bills and we live on hubbys wages (alot better than mine) and he pays for the cars and things. So its a huge shock to the system having my wages cut big time. Then again we are putting as much savings by as possible so it mught just work out ok.
Thanks for that info, really helps xxxx

No Chick, if your off sick at any point 4 weeks beofere the babies due then they can make you take it but other then that they don;t. Also as I found out from my doc, any time you have off sick that is for pregnancy you have to be paid for. If you get a letter from the doc saying for eg that your off for 2 days due to a pregnancy related illness then you have to be paid in full for that day off and it doesn;'t go against you on your sick record!!
I have just had lots of money back paid from when I was off at the beggining of mine with extreme tiredness and sickness!! Worth knowing if you only get paid sat sick pay. xxxxx
Thanks a million you've been a great help xxxx
Well I would still just give your notice for as late as you can and if you're getting too much back pain then the doc will just have to sign you off, and as kimmi says they have to pay you full sick pay. I can sympathise with the driving, I took my test 2 weeks before baby was born!!! What a lot of fun!

i know, its just that i have to take other things into account too like travelling and getting behind the wheel when im so big. Also i broke my tail bone about 2 years ago and because of the pregnancy im starting to get pains at the bottom of my back which doesnt help when im sitting in an office.
I think i'll only be able to take my 39 weeks SMP due to finances. I really wish i could take a year but dont think its going to be possible. baby will be at least 7 months by the time i return to work.
