How can I make him walk??

Ryan is beginning to drive me crazy! He's just turned two and has been walking properly for about 9 months, well running really, and he is a perfectly capeable walker, but he just won't! This morning I decided to walk down to my local town (literally 5 minutes walk, 10 if we walk really slowly, if you stand at the end of my street you can see where we're going lol) and decided Ryan could walk too cos he needed to let some energy off. He put his reins on good as gold (he never walks anywhere without them, cos when I say he walks, really he runs) As soon as we were on our drive he asked to be picked up, so I picked him up and said I'd carry him to the end of the street and then he had to walk down the hill to town. Got to the end of the street and put him down and he cried to be picked up so I picked him up and set off home to get the pushchair, faced with the threat of the pushchair he decided he would walk. Walked down really nicely, waiting for the cars to cross the road, pressing the button on the pedestrian lights and waiting for the beeps, counting how many cars went past before we could cross a very busy road, counting the red cars in the car park etc. Then on the way home he decided he wouldn't walk home. After standing for 10 mintues in morrisons car park while he had a paddy (a really sweet old lady went past after everyone else gave me dirty looks and she went "don't worry love, he'll be fine in a minute. They all have their moments don't they?" I was like thank god someone else who has had a child and realises that sometimes you have to stop and have a paddy in morrisons car park! lol) anyway, after 10 mintues I dragged him home kicking and screaming. I know I sound horrible but he's too heavy for me to carry at the best of times and I was ill at the beggining of the week and haven't got all my strength back and its uphill so I had no chance of carrying him and the shopping home. So basically, how can I make him walk, other than continuing to drag him home kicking and screaming? Or is this the only way? It's not like he can't, he just won't! He can run around in the garden none stop for hours, but try and get him to walk 10 minutes down the road- no chance! And at the same time he hates being in his pushchair! Please someone tell me I'm not the only one?? And any help please? (And sorry it's been so ranty lol) Thankys =]

When I found out i was pregnant with my 2nd i wanted Georgie out of the pushchair. I took it with me, and she walked on her reins and then went where we needed to. That way I could get her to walk and if she was naughty or tired the buggy was still there as a last resort. At least I could carry he shopping in it too! Good luck xxx

Are you going anywhere interesting when you go down the road? Does your son know where you are going – have you asked him to choose the way (if that is possible!) Is there a park you can go to on the way or on your return? If none of these are possible turn the trip into a treasure hunt of sorts - can you find a blue car on the way? Can you find a road sign with his initial in it? In other words make it worth your son’s while! If walking down the road is boring he won’t want to do it, make it interesting and exciting and he will be far more likely to want to go. It may also be worth checking that his footwear is suitable for walking a distance (and to a two year old ten minutes can be a distance!) if his feet hurt he won’t want to walk! If he hates his pushchair he may be finding it uncomfortable – if possible really check this out if you can sit him in at home. Does it support his back properly? Are his legs comfortable on the foot rest? Are the straps of the harness the right length or do they cut into him? He may like a rear facing buggy so he can talk to you! If you really feel a buggy is essential it may be worth trying a few new ones but your son will probably only be using it for another year so you need to balance cost against convenience!

alfies 2 and a half and still doesnt walk very far but dont sit still at home. unless im just going to corner shop i take the pushchair with me because at least he has the choice to do either but he will not walk on reigns at all. i walk to my mums at least once a week and its about 30-40 min walk we start off alfie walking usually lasts at mostr 5 mins then he wants to get in buggy and then i let him out 5 mins from my mums and he walks fine if we go to town he walks to tram stop 5 mins again and then gets in buggy once we get to town and then i let him out for a bit whuile we r there and then when we get off tram he walks home. i find this so much easier than trying to make him walk further for now otherwise i wudnt end up getting anywhere b4 midnight lol but i do know where u are comming from ive tried nopt taking the buggy etc but end up carrying him and doing my back in or refusing to carry him and he sits down and refuses to move! xx
