Morning all, hope everyone is well! I am trying to find out what my 8 month old should be doing about now? Every baby website seems to say different things at each stage and I just want to know what she should be doing.....?

Do remember that all developmental milestones are just a guideline and not every baby achieves them at the same time. You should not worry if your baby is not doing absolutely everything on a list. The kinds of things you could look out for are: - Should be able to sit without support. - Might start to crawl or shuffle along on her bottom. - Might be able to pull herself up to stand on furniture or move along holding onto it. - A lot of babies can wave “bye, bye”. - Might begin to understand when you say “no” to things. - Will make lots of different sounds and “babbling”. - Will hold objects, pass from one hand to the other, and pop in everything into her mouth. - She will enjoy the kinds of toys that can be stacked and putting things in containers. It is usually around this age that the developmental check is carried out by your GP or Health Visitor and you should really go along for this so that they can reassure you she is doing everything she should be. This is also a good time to really think ahead about safety as your baby can reach more, put things in her mouth, so make sure you check around your house and lock away anything harmful.

thanks! she seems to be doing all of those things so i guess she is doing fine! She is crawling and has been for 5 and a half weeks and can walk around holding onto the furniture, shes also saying mum and dada and definately understands NO although mostly she disregards it lol...shes just started yesterday to cry when she is told not to do something! Glad to know she is doing what she sould be!

At birth babies have very little control of their bodies. Control starts at the head (mouth first then eyes) then moves down the body- head the arms then legs. Along each limb control starts at the top and works out- so babies control arms, then hands then fingers and all the leg before ankles and feet. The sequence of what he can do is based on what can be controlled.
Babies vary in speed (its nothing to do with abilities- physical or mental). Speed tends to run in families. By eight mounths the average baby is sitting- and adjusting posture as he reaches. Is beginning to pat and stroke- and will soon be able to pick up peas and point. He may be crawling but if in a crawling position is more likely to rock than crawl. He can take his weight on his feet,
He probably has a few signs- pick me up-no. He laughs, he gurgles. If you want to know more try my book The baby Development test. Its all there!
