Diabetes!

Hi all, Any one else been in a similar position may be jumping the gun, but for years my OH has had some symptoms of diabetes. Wounds healing slowly, numbness in hands and face, drinking lots etc. About four or five years ago I took him for a free test at Loyds Pharmacy and they said his blood sugar was high but not diabetes... and he should be careful what he eats. With my help he greatly improved his diet of sweets, pop and take aways to homecooked food. He has recently had an infection on his toe that won't clear and doctor has sent him for a diabetes test. I suspect it may come back positive (and imagine they will say diet controlled!) So here are the questions 1) can diabetes affect his fertility, and what could help him? 2) When they say diet controlled what are we talking... regular meals at set times? wholemeal, and slow release carbs? Lots of carbs, or limit the carbs? obviously limit sugar - but what about honey or fruit? Even if he doesn't have it he clearly has a tendency towards it... so if anyone knows how I can help him keep it at bay I'd love some advice as I'd rather start to take action right away than wait however long it takes to get him sorted on the NHS. What sort of eating habits should he adopt?

Thanks edgewood. Hoping he will have the confidence to be honest with fetility specialist. I tend to just blurt it out!! He is much more patient and is not so worried about not giving all info.
Really appreciate your post... will work on encouraging healthier diet still
Cheers

aaah try not to worry as long as it's found n not just left it really is treatably, it's my dad who has it and he's very partial to chocolate so he does still have it and aint probably made as many changes as he should TBH with regards to his diet but he manages, he takes his pills has regular special eyetests n has to visit the chiropodists to have simple things like cutting toe nails n stuff incase he were to cut himself doing it as like u said it can effect the ability to heal properly, type 2 diabeties usually does produce small amounts of insulin but not enough unlike type 1 that don't produce any at all. at least he's being checked and if he does have it he'll be treated and it's just common sense really as far as the diet is concerned. as for the low libido n stuff he should really mention this to the dr as there are many things available that can signifficantly help him. xxxx

oh sorry not sure about if it could effect his fertility but it can certainly effect the ability to get and maintain erections! xx
Actually when I first met him this was more of a problem, he still feels he has a low libido (needs at least one day off.. and can't go every two days for extended periods - which is a pain with my stupidly long cycles!)

As for his diet... I really hope it can avoid it altogether!!! It's a disease I really have very little understanding of.. appart from it being a lack of insulin to breakdown of the sugar in the blood. If you could ask your uncle for some dietary advice I'd really appreciate it!

Thanks for your post!

hiya my nephew and niece both have type 1 diabeties but my dad has type 2 which is what your husband would have if he is diagnosed with it usually type 2 is controlled by having a healthy balanced diet which does include fruit of course but u need to be careful with things with high sugar content such as grapes as these can raise sugar levels, and then they may give him tablets to help control it also, will also have to use the blood strips to test his sugar levels throughout the day and be advised to exercise regularly, hope everything goes ok maybe if he's just borderline and he's changed or changes his diet it can be avoided all together. xxxx
