My daughter Sophie is only 14 weeks old, 15 on Sunday coming (21st) and she came out in chickenpox spots on Monday 15th and they are still coming out but some of them are starting to scab over.Is it usual for a baby this age to get chickenpox?I've never heard of it.My other kids were 2, 4 and 6 when they got it; one after the other.I really feel so sorry for her.She doesn't know what's wrong with her, she can't talk so all she can do is cry contantly and she keeps thrashing her head from side to side.I also have put scratch mitts on her so she can't pick and scratch so they don't get infected though the one on her ear looks bad and her ear has went red and hot.I keep thinking well at least she's had them now and won't get them again but still feel she's far too young to get something like this.
It is unusual for a baby this young to contract chickenpox and probably means you haven’t had it yourself! The best thing you can do for her to is to keep her as cool as possible, and apply some calamine lotion to the spots. This will help to dry them out and will stop them itching. If she has a fever then you will need to ask your health visitor to suggest an appropriate medicine for her. Tepid baths will help to keep her temperature down but pat her dry! The scabs must be allowed to heal and drop off by themselves, not rubbed away with a towel. Make sure she has plenty to drink, little and often is usually best. And – if you haven’t had the virus yourself you may well catch it from your daughter!
Thanks for your replies and advice. After a week, they had all scabbed over and now they are all away.A couple have left dents but you would hardly know she'd had chickenpox. She was very good as she didn't scratch her spots so they healed quite fast.
Sophie got her 3rd lot of injections this week and is fine, apart from a bit of swelling at the injection site on one leg.The heat is really getting to her so we've had a bit of a hard time trying to get her settled for bed some nights, tonight for example. It was a case of 3rd time lucky for getting her settled.Fingers crossed, she'll sleep well tonight.
My son was only 5 months when he picked it up from baby group, apparently at the time there had been an outbreak in our area lol. Its not very nice but he coped well and the calomine lotion really seemed to help. He's been left with one tiny scar above his eyebrow (he had three spots in each eyebrow) but the rest of him is clear. Its best to get it out the way xxx
