One of the things that may help most is to have the toddler in a really good routine. This does not mean that the routine has to be inflexible and rigid but just so that he is settled and secure and therefore better able to cope with change. The routine can revolve around mealtimes and sleep with times for play by himself and with you (indoors and out) and quiet times for you both with a book. When the new baby is born it is much easier to fit in feeds if your son is already happy to amuse himself with toys while you sit near him to feed. Buy your son a doll that he can care for, cuddle and pretend to feed while you care for the baby, just because he is a little boy does not mean that he can’t be caring! Talk about babies as you get nearer to your due date and show him pictures of babies – there are some lovely books on the market now, try The Baby’s Catalogue by Janet Ahlberg, a great book to share and talk about baby things!
