hey we got the angelcare monitor that has a sensor mat that detects movement. An alarm sounds after 20secs if no movement (it detects babies breathing so dont think u will be up all nite turning off the alarm lol) it normally goes off because baby has rolled off it. It cost 70pound but it was well worth it as we can have a gr8 nites sleep knowing if anything were to happen, the alarm will wake us up.

i would just like to say that on ebay theres a shop (sorry i dnt know anymore detail than that) that sells new baby monitiors.

my friend got one with a screen on and all those other gadget bits, for £60! which i thought was reasonable!

Hi,

Let me introduce myself, I am Alison Brown one of the gurgle experts, I am a midwife and answer some of the questions that come up on the site.

I have just notice your thread and thought I would offer some advice.

There is so much choice out there and it is difficult to know where to start.

The primary aims of a baby monitor is as a simple listening device so you can here your baby stirring and go and tend to them. The basic monitors do just this and meet the needs of most parents.

Moving on from the basic monitors you start to get ones with all sorts of functions and with this the price rises too.

When buying a monitor you need to think about which functions, if any, appeal to you and fit within your budget.

Most monitors are used for when your baby is sleeping and there is some very good advice about save sleeping on the ‘fsid’s website: http://fsid.org.uk/Page.aspx?pid=406

Also here is a link to the NHS leaflet on safe sleeping: http://fsid.org.uk/Document.Doc?id=25

Hope that helps.

Kind regards

Alison

I had a basic Tomy one which has done me proud for 8 years. It is not a digital one and only has two channels. My Mum had the same one though and could pick up her next door neighbours child screaming a little too easily!!! My advice is that if you have neighbours with babies go for a monitor with lots of channels (digital) - if not a basic one was fine. Also, you will only need a rechargable one if you are going to have "your end" clipped to your belt or unplugged fron the mains cable alot.
