From what I've garnered on here it varies between different districts. Your best bet would be to get in touch with your local council and ask them directly what their policy is with 1st time school admissions in your area. I do know that children legally do not have to start school until the September term following their 5th birthday but can and usually do start as early as the September term following their 4th birthday
My daughter was put on the waiting list for school at 3days old how ridiculous!
As far as I know all councils in England are the same re school admissions. The cut off birth date is the 31st of August and the need to be 4 to start. You can't apply until roughly the year before they are due to start. The application dates are different for different councils (just to confuse us)!!! Usually you can look online from the year before the sept the are due to start to find out the application dates. It won't hurt to phone the school to check if they have the same policy. I did this when we moved in to our new house when my daughter was 15 months which is how I found out about admissions into school. Also if you're child is in nursery or preschool they should give you info on when to apply. Sorry to waffle, HTH X
ok thanks im going to look into it. i know there ages yet! but im excited :) and want to make sure she gets in there. so if she turns 4 in the january will she start that following september??
Yep she will. I pretty sure that from a school view the year goes from 1st September right round to 31st August so any child born on 1st September or after will have to wait for the next school year to start (like my daughter born 4th September) As long as their 4 before the start of the September term then their in.

Our schools are really over subsribed so I put down three in order of preference. I got my second choice which is my closest school. I only put the other school as first as it is performing better and I liked the feel of it but thankfully I was just as happy with my second choice. If you have more than one close by I would recommend visiting both before you make a choice. Also every area seems to have a slightly different way of how they allocate places. You should be able to view this online when applications open. Good luck xx
Cheers that's really helpful! I can think of about two very close schools and one a bit further that we could if needs be travel to, all of which I've been to at some point or other for school fĂȘtes and the like (may have another look though from a more 'potential place of daughters education' point of view!) and one I went to myself as a child (so if overcrowding is a problem which I've seen evidence of around our way too!) I'll probably be putting down all three. Thanks again x
