Hello - I was wondering if anyone has the anomoly in their baby of Hydronephrosis, which is the dilation of the renal pelvis. I am currently being monitored and will not be seen for another 6 weeks for another scan but I am concerned that if during this time the dilation becomes larger and ruptures? Is this possible, or is it comparable to the babies growth. I did speak to my midwife about this but she wasn't particularly knowledgeable and just told me not to worry!! I am 23 weeks and I'm due another scan around 30 weeks. I am also worried if it gets too large then I have to have a "shunt" where they will drain the fluid and this can be quite serious?
If anyone is going through the same thing and knows a bit more about this condition, it would be good to hear from you!

Hi nicci,at our 2owk scan it showed up that our baby has severe hydronephrosis. The left kidney is grossly dialated. The right kidney is ok and functioning as it should and we have been told that as long as one kidney is working ok then things should be ok.Had a scan at kings college hospital last wk(25wks pregnant)to see how left kidney was and was told it is non functional,I am due to have another scan at 28wks then another at 32 wks but this is mainly to check that the right kidney is still functioning ok,if it starts to be affected then they may have to deliver my baby early

Hi Nicci,
I'm 32 weeks now and my little one was also diagnosed with mild hydronephrosis on my 20 week scan. Thankfully the ureters, bladder and kidneys seemed to be working fine. I had another scan 4 weeks later and will have another one in 2 weeks time. I do not know the rate of dilatation that your baby has and further state of his/her organs, so I can not comment on your case. Apparently, this is a really frequent issue. Mine had a really mild dilatation (7.1 & 7.3)so my GP, midwife and sonographers said that it was related to the baby's growth and it will probably get to normal by the end of my pregnancy. There's plenty of info on the internet that can mostly be reassuring and put your mind in rest. I think that unless the dilatation is severe, the worst it can happen if it perseveres is that they will need to give your baby antibiotics once born and monitor him/her every 6 months. I would ask you to see your GP and stay calm as at the moment there's nothing you can do other than wait, eat well, drink plenty of water and take good care of yourself and your little one. Please keep in touch.
