Group B Strep

Hi, Im 37 weeks pregnant, and was told by the doctor that I have group strep b, I was wondering if anyone else can share there experiences with labour and having the infection. Does it affect your birth plan in anyway?

You no longer need to have antibiotics if you're carrying GBS, I had it with my second pregnancy and my first baby tested positive for it. I never had antibiotics and neither of my babies had to have them either. My midwife told me you can have a home or birthing centre birth. You don't have to go to hospital. You just need to make sure the midwifes delivering your baby know you've got it in case of complications so that the baby can be taken to hospital if needed. Both of my babies were perfectly healthy and happy babies so try not to worry x

Thank you, well hopefully people will read all these stories and find out more information about strep B!! x
hey i just found this thread ther.... i have GBS. The midwifes explain last time what it was but not really in any big detail. When i was in labour with my daughter i was only in hospital for half an hour and she was born, it was a normal deliery and they didnt have time to give me the IV drip of antibiotics. When charlotte was born they took her to intensive care to give her the iv and a wee splint to hold it in... totally wasnt a big deal made of it, they just explained she would need to go down every couple of hours to get the antibiotics. We went into hospital on the friday nite and left on the sunday tea time. :) i hope you all dont worry too much coz everything was totally fine in my experience, and im up again in Feb for round 2!!! lol :) x

I think we should be told alot more about the infection, as when I was told at the hospital it seemed that the midwife couldnt be bothered to explain the infection and just handed me a leaflet, only last monday my midwife at my clinic explained a lot more to me, as the cover midwife I saw before didnt want to explain much to me.
Good luck with the rest of your pregnancy.

I had this during the alter stages of my oregnancy, my birth plan was to be at a birthing centre but because of the GBS i needed to be tied down to a bed basically with the anti boitics in one arm and the monitor thing attached to me for the duration of my labour which was bloody horrible but atleast i new that the baby would be born in the safest way without getting the infection. Hope everything goes well for you even if it does affect your birth plan i think that alot of the time they dfont go to plan any way and it weill affect it in a good way for baby! xx

i found that my hospital was quite good with me i had to have my girl 3 weeks early and the day i went into hospital they told me i had it as it was written all in my notes that they found out i had it just in time,it was also sent in post i didint receive the letter till after i got home with my daughter, but my daughters heart beat dropped dramaticly i was going to have an e c section but as her heartbeat got faster they gave me the option i said i wanted to go for natural birth so i had to be moniter though out birth and have the drip, they just keep a closer eye on you i think,i had a mw in with me through out my whole labour where as they tend to wonder in and out,i did have to stay in hos for 5 days after though as she picked strep b up even though i had the anti biotics so would say look up the signs in babies so you can keep an eye on them if a nurse hadnt walked past at the time she did maybe we wouldnt have been so lucky i dont know...but i think majority are ok x
I'm glad everything turned out ok for you, its good to hear some first hand information. Luckily they picked mine up during a swab for thrush, glad I know sooner rather than later. I have a mw appointment next week so will definately be asking as much as possible about it. I've been told to expect to stay in after the birth a little longer than normal, but aslong as my LO is fine, its a small price to pay!xx
