Unfortunately, you are expecting a bit too much too soon. I appreciate the difficulty of wanting to be in a routine and your husband going back to work, but as your baby is just three weeks, it is much too young to expect this. Your baby has a tiny little tummy so can only take enough food to fill it up, and he is still very young, so any “play-time” would be very short, and many babies just do fall asleep while feeding, or immediately after.
It is very hard for many parents, but there is often a difficult evening period when babies cry for what seems like no reason. Some people put this down to colic. Others think of it as the witching hour!
It is also highly unlikely your baby would sleep through the night until he is quite a bit older. Again because he can only take a small amount of food, he also needs to feed in the night. He also quite likely needs the comfort of cuddles and closeness to you at this age.
By about three months, things tend to settle down. There is usually less crying, and a routine may well emerge, but at the moment, it is really best to be led by what your baby needs, especially as he is so content for much of the time, and you are obviously getting it right.
It might help to have a chat with your health visitor so that she can give you more advice about babies this age.
ooops sorry i kept pressing the button because it was taking ages. Didn't mean to keep boring u with the same post 8 times lol xxxxx
Lol! I got all excited about having loads of posts to read for a minute then! We've tried what you've suggested and it seems to be working. He's got a proper bedtime routine now and he's pretty good in the night now. The only problem now is that he doesn't want to sleep in the day and gets all tired and irritable. All good fun eh! I forget that he's still only 4 weeks old and doesn't know what he really wants half the time. Bless them. Anyway, thank you for your post, hope all is going well with you and yours.xxx

Hi there,
I have a 3 week old little boy who is content to feed nicely and sleep well during the day but then play up at night.
He never stays awake for long enough after a feed or nappy change to have any 'play time' and as a result he is terrible at settling in the evening and then ends up getting overtired and irritable.
What can I do to keep him interested in the day and hopefully tire him out for a good night's sleep? Hubby is going back to work next week and works shifts in a hospital so we need to crack this sooner rather than later!
Thanks!x
hey there,
my baby girl is 8 weeks 2day and she has only just started to see the difference between day and night. She too use to sleep all day then wake up of a night full of beans wanting lots of attention. I don't think there is any quick fixes, well none that worked 4 me anyway. I just use to make sure the rooms was bright in the day with lots of noise like leaving the telly on playing music and when she was awake talking to her lots. Of a night keep lights 2 a low, with no noise. Apart from her mobile playing twinkle twinkle. As i said its taken weeks so maybe this method hasn't help at all and she has just done this by herself and with age i don't no. But i do know that lack of sleep is really draining and made me feel quite run down and ill. It didn't do much for my relationship with my partner eva. but there is light and it does get easier. You just have to go with it. I'm soo happy my LO sleeps 7-8 hours of a night now i feel so refreshed in the morning. I'm like a new women lol.
Hope things getter better for you soon. maybe someone else will have a better tip good luck xxxxxxxx
