Excessive salivation, called ptyalism, is often experienced by pregnant women so in this respect it can be a sign of pregnancy. It’s not clear why it happens but it’s sometimes associated with severe morning sickness. Excess saliva may also be associated with heartburn, or a dental problem such as gum irritation or inflammation so if you’ve not had a dental check-up recently it would be wise to consider having one – let your dentist know that you might be pregnant. When you repeat your pregnancy test you’ll know one way or the other whether your watery mouth is down to being pregnant or not!
