Hey guys, I have a 4 week old little boy and everyone asks me if I have tried a dummy yet and when I say no they seem really surprised and tell me how great they are - My mother inlaw will not stop going on about it, its driving me crazy - I just havent felt the need to use 1 yet, The cryings not that bad yet..touch wood... although I have a few spare just incase - My boy is awake most of the day not crying just looking around and feeding, He feeds every 2 hours and goes 3 or 4 hours in the night - I am breastfeeding and I dont want a dummy to stop him latching on as I have heard it sometimes can - What age is best to introduce a dummy to breastfeed babies? Has anyone had problems breastfeeding whilst introducing a dummy?
Thanks for your help X
I started giving my LO at dummy at about 8/9 weeks i think as she was very sucky and when i was pregnant and had had her i was adamant i wasn't going to give her one but she needs to suck alot and this is what she does! She uses it to get to sleep and chews on it during the day. She's now 6 months old and i will need to start thinking about getting rid of it at some point in the future but she needs it just now as it comforts her in a way i cannot so i am happy with that. Just do whatever feels right for you. Oh and i am still happily breastfeeding her and she has never got confused between the two or anything. x

But his hands are there for life I cant take them away or really stop him....My friend has a 4 year old who still sucks his thumb so much so that he gets a reoccurring skin infection on it!!
:) Its normal for babies to suck on their hands. He might not want a dummy after all of this anyway :) x
It would be harder to wean him off a dummy ;)

Hi..Thanks for all your advice well Jude is 6 weeks old today and I have still not given him a dummy however that may be about to change since he has really started to suck his fist when crying/tired over the past few days - I would rather him suck a dummy that his hand - I cant ween a hand away..lol..He is also using me as a dummy as he falls asleep as soon as he is on my breast..So now may be the time!!

Hi, I needed to give my baby a dummy within the first week of breast feeding otherwise she would have been there constantly!!! This did not affect her latching on as I was very worried it would. You need to do what you think. You know your baby better than anyone x
if he doesn't need one don't give him one! why give him something he doesn't need. sounds like you're being very tollerable and if you can keep being patient then don't give in. dummies aren't a necessity. i think you are very lucky not to have needed one yet. good luck
