I have just fed my 5 week baby his first bottle of expressed milk, Which he loved :-), I managed to express 5oz yesterday but he only just took 2oz, What do I do with the left over 3oz can this be put back in the fridge to be given later? After his fed he seemed very happy but about half hour later was hungry again so I put him back on my breast which he took to straightaway to my relief. Also how much expressed milk does a 10lb 5 week old baby boy generally need? Hard to know how much he guzzles during breastfeeding..Worried about expressing too less and leaving him hungry but dont want to express too much and it be a waste..Help!!! XX
You need to throw away any unused milk. How much he has totally depends on your baby, they're all so different and it can change with each feed. My baby usually takes about 3oz but this is just a rough estimate. I think naughtyness meant to say you can keep expressed milk in the fridge for 3 days (not months) Well done on expressing 5oz, that's really good!
Thank you hun, Now chucked away..Expressed 5oz during day yesterday expressed 3oz first time and 2oz second..Just gonna build a supply up and only give 3oz at a time then give more if needed....I know I can express throughout day and add to same bottle in fridge, Is it ok to add this bottle to pump or has it got to be a new bottle then add to the bottle in fridge??
yes i did mean 3 days, sorry x
Maybe offer him 2-3ozs of expressed milk & save whatever else you have expressed in the fridge!!
If he is still hungry after you've given him what is in the bottle then you can always give him the rest!!
Expressed breastmilk can be stored for upto 3 months in the fridge & 6 months in the freezer, so it could be a good idea to start & build up a supply just incase you need it!!
You shouldn't have any problems getting him to go back to breast after giving him a bottle as breastfeeding should be established now!!
Hope this helps x
Good idea, I didnt think of this..doh..Thank you!!Because the left over milk has been heated once in a bottle warmer it needs throwing away it cant be chilled again?? Heard its 3 days in the fridge and 3 months in freezer X
