Hi - I knew someone who was told she was having a girl at her 20 week scan and then she paid for a 3D scan which also confirmed she was having a girl. You can imagine the utter shock when she gave birth to a bouncing baby BOY - having bought everything in pink too. Poor little thing was mistaken for a girl for the first 3 months of his life!! No just kidding - she obviously returned and exchanged all the stuff she bought for boys things instead. Just goes to show they really can get it very wrong - even with a 3D scan (although I'm sure my friend was just very unlucky and those 3&4D scans are USUALLY spot on) Best to just wait till the time comes for a really great surprise x

I've heard about it a couple of times, and like Prozacfairy said, its not exact and they do always advise its not 100%. The point of the scan is also to look for anomalys and whether babys growth is on track not to determine the sex, even though it is nice to find out. I can imagine your friend is a bit surprised, but hopefully she can exchange things! At least she didnt find out at birth, like its happened to someone I know. He was asking the nurse for his little man, and got handed his little girl!
i had a friend at work who that happened to! she had like 3 scans durting pregnancy and each time was told it was "100% a girl" (like you say it is not 100% ever) her little girl turned out to be a little boy and her MIL was major peed off at having knitted a load of pink monstrosties for him that he would never wear! lol mummy was fine with it as she had wanted a little boy coz "sons take care of their mothers where i come from dahlingk!" i'm glad i never found out the sex now. the surprise is lovely. obviously its always a surprise no matter when you find out but it was lovely asking the bloke "what is it?" to be answered "its our little baby!" before finally realising what i meant (doofus!) and being told i'd had a girl. ahh magical! x x

I'm paranoid about that! (though for no good reason!) What it was is that I was convinced it was a boy but found at 20 week scan it was a girl. Scanner actually asked us straight off if we wanted to know (probably so she didn't slip up and say she or he if we didn't want to know) told her I did but OH didn't and she said we'd both have to agree (they didn't mind 4 years ago!) so whilst she was doing the important checks and measurements and giving us the occasional 'everything looks fine so far' I distracted myself as it was better than lying there stressing over if something awful was going to show up (my OH's boy was shown on a scan to have only one complete kidney) by trying to threaten/bribe my OH into wanting to find out. Short of it is baby was perfectly healthy and all it took to convince OH was the promise I'd buy him a packet of fags (my usual response is I'll buy you a gun its quicker) Anyway when we said we wanted to know just before the end (after measurements and after she'd shown off all the body parts to my mum and daughter who'd been allowed in) she took all of two seconds to move the image to the right area, point out the lack of extras and tell us it was a girl so obviously it must have been obvious (to her at least) whilst she was doing all her checks as there was no umming and arring it was just look here...its a girl....done! x

its not an exact science tho and at 16 weeks it pretty early to tell i thought. if its got dangly bits its presumed to be a boy if it hasnt its presumed to be a girl. its a shame but surely your friend can exchange her pink stuff for blue stuff? most important thing is that the baby is healthy.
