I'd be great if the NHS managed to get that kind of "service" to all pregnant women. I think that having the same midwife all the way through definately increases feelings of trust and "being well looked after", hence why I said I'd like that. I've already seen 4 different midwives and next time I'm in the hospital so its unlikely I'll see any of them again. Shame, considering they'll be spending a good amount of time looking at my bits;)
I had 5 different midwives throughout my pregnancy and the one I had when I gave birth wasnt 1 of them but i had a fantastic labour experience and will definately be using the nhs again if we have a 2nd child :)
Im' sorry but how ridiculous! £3500! That money could have been better spent on the baby! Its not like she was even treated any better than I was and I had my baby NHS. The nhs were awesome by the way..i had the same midwife whole way through etc etc

Hey!
I personally had my baby NHS however, my best friends parents paid for her to go privatley with her 1st baby.
From what she had told me the room was exceptionally clean, she had her own birthing pool, own midwife everything was lovely...
except when she wanted to up her pain relief to an epidural... she had to wait 4 hours for an anaesthatist (sp?) to arrive which was the longest four hours of her life as they didn't have their own anaesthatist on the premises. By the time he had got to her to give epidural she was 8cm and then was refused it, so she had to go full steam ahead without anything (she was very scared and not happy)
the whole 3 day service cost £3500 and was in Surrey.
The other good point was visitors were allowed to come and go whenever they wanted where as in NHS visiting times are very limited.
I must add she went on to have her 2nd baby NHS!!!

I had my daughter in an NHS hospital and was actually in for a week before she was born as I had pre eclampsia and I have to say, I think both my daughter and I were looked after brilliantly throughout. Sorry I cant offer any views on going private as I have no experience of it but like Bobbysgirls said, we pay our taxes to support the NHS so we may as well use it! x
If I had the money, I think I'd go for a private midwife, purely so that I know what I've got and the same person supports me all the way through. That would make me more comfortable during labour, too, I think. That is not to say though, that all the midwives I've met so far weren't very nice. They were brilliant so far, and I'd be happy for any one of them to deliver my baby. I'm just not very keen overall on hospitals and the experiences I've had there.
A friend of mine went private some time ago (about 2-3 years ago), and like horsedentist said, commented on the room, how accomodating they are... i.e. allowed daddy to sit on the bed and cuddle his family (whereas in the NHS you might get thrown out if you so much as look at the bed). She said she'd do it again privately, and her room was very homily and not very hospital like, which I think I'd like, too. It did cost her an arm and a leg tho...
the NHS is good enough for the Roonies. i pay my taxes to support the nhs so i may as well use them when i give birth besides i can't afford to go private.
