Anyone know a good sewing machine?

I'm going on a course soon and need to buy a good sewing machine that's not too expensive. I'll be using it afterwards a lot (planning on being a dressmaker you see :P) anyone know any good brands? x

my mum used to make us clothes when we were kids and my sister did a textiles a level, they both swear by the brand singer they have been around forever so they must be good :)
