reflux...

Anyone out there with good advice about reflux? Our baby leo is 4 and half months and has had reflux since birth. It comes and goes and seems to get worse when he's one a growth spurt when he needs more milk. Its always the same sequence, first he screams as though in pain, nothing soothes him, then he brings back the whole feed, not just a trickle. He doesnt do this with every feed, its just the occasional one. Health visitor and dietician recommend weaning him early, he's 18 weeks (4 and half months) old. I just wonder if its related to the fact he was induced at 38 weeks, or if its cuz I only managed to partially breast feed, so is it bottle related? He used to get hiccups a lot inside me when I was pregnant, so did he have it even then? So many questions no one seems to know answer to.. I just want to know what I can do to help him. Is weaning the answer? Or will it make matters worse? Help!!!!! Liz xx

We had this issue with Lucas and they prescribed Gaviscon but, like other people he became constipated and was having to have lactulose too. We tried gaviscon mixed with a little water before his feed instead of with his milk and added colief to his milk and the difference is amazing.

All babies are different and there are so many different things to try but dont just take the doctors word for it and if the baby is unhappy it isnt fair on either of you.

Lucas was born early like your LO and also had hiccups all the time so there could well be a link between these things. I would try some Colief personally and see what happens.

Both my kids had reflux, with my first we tried Gaviscon but it just constipated her so the paediatrician prescribed ranitidine. In the end her reflux sorted itself out at about 7 or 8 months. I now have a 5 1/2 month old who's reflux was worse and he wasn't putting on weight. He's on Gaviscon which does help (although he's having to take lactulose too as it makes him constipated) We've had to start weaning him at 5 months because of the weight problem and he was still needing to feed every 3 hours day and night. It hasn't helped with the reflux but at least he's putting on weight. Both of mine also used to get hiccups when I was pregnant. It's not bottle related, both of mine were purely breast fed (my baby still is). Feel free to add me as a friend and I'll answer any more questions x
