If you are breastfeeding, you may be offered the progesteron only pill (sometimes called 'POP'), this doesn't dry up your supply, but the downside is that you must take it at the very same time every day or if you don't (like me!) you'll find you are bleeding and without any reliable contraceptive protection, which isn't exactly the aim of the game is it!!?? As someone who has had a Mirena IUD Coil fitted in the past, i didn't really have a very good time on it. Mirena is different as it contains a 'depot' inside it of contraceptive hormones. This means the inside of your uterus gets treated to it's very own low dose of contraceptive hormones. The plus side should be that your periods lighten (or disappear). For me personally i experienced a number of side effects which included worsening period pains and a dry vagina (plus of course the usual 'hanging down chord thingy... which is not marvellously attractive, though you get used to it). As you can imagine i was less than thrilled and my partner wasn't exactly putting out the party bunting either. I had to have it removed and it has put me off IUD's i have to say, though absolutely loads of folks in long term monogamous relationships swear by them. I have returned to the combined pill now as my breast milk supply dried up unexpectedly so it made no difference. The combined pill (which offers you some latitude on the time you take it) really will see off any breast milk production so think long and hard before you go back to it. I would have a chat with a few folks, possibly both a GP and a practice nurse or two before you decide on anything that isn't very easily reversible. Being totally fair, all these people will have their own preferences, which may or may not suit you - so it's well worth taking the time to get a few opinons! Good luck.

I didn't know that about a coil, interesting. I take the pill which suits me fine but I did consider the coil too. there is one called Marina or something which is meant to be good.

I think the coil is fine unless you had a caesarean and not a natural birth, I was told the coil was unsuitable because I have had two c-sections!
