Hi all. My son has just had his MMR and thankfully all seems ok. I was just wondering what signs would you see if it triggered the autism? Is there anything specific I should watch for? Thanks

Please try to worry, alot of the reports are wrong and the media has done a good job over the past 10 years at giving parents the wrong facts. I went through the same issue when my 9 year old was born when the first reports came out and again this year with my 3 months old. My son has ADHD and I have worked with Autistic Spectrum children, read heaps of reports and studies and done research too on child behaviour and developement. Children appear the same but then a difference is noticed when the child doesn't behaviour or reach the the same milestones as their peers and this is when proffessionals and parents see something different. It works the same way with ADHD and Autistic children just like others. A child is deemed different at a later stage when they would usually be able to talk and socialise with other children so if a child who should be able to do this seems unable to then questions are asked. This is how I explain it: I knew my son had ADHD when he was 6 months old as his half siblings had it and so did his biological dad. But my son acted like other kids until the differences were so different from his peers that proffessionals started to hear me. The tests couldn't be done until he was 6 as all children display some ADHD behaviour, so if a child is Autistic then it will only be at a later date when they appear different from their peers as to suggest that they have Autism. The thing is it's hard to tell if a child is Autistic until they appear somehow different from their peers and this is when parents ask if the child is. When the media got hold of the report it scared alot of parents-me included! The only reason it was back in the media this year is because one of the men that did the first report wrote another one and lets just say the media got hold of it and again scared alot of parents that only want the best for their children. There is an increase of measles due to this-measles can kill-autism doesn't. I live with my son's behaviour daily and it's been very hard and scary but to not give him the MMR may have been giving him a death sentence instead so I decided that he would have it and again a few weeks ago with my 3 month old daughter.
